Brief
The
Third National Housing and HIV/AIDS Research Summit received global
and national attention this year in
Baltimore March 5-7, as the venue for discussion of some
of the most compelling and ground breaking AIDS housing research to
date. This year's theme,
Examining the Evidence: The Impact of Housing on HIV Prevention and
Care, attracted over 200 HIV/AIDS researchers, housing
and homelessness policy experts, consumers, and HIV/AIDS service
providers from the U.S. and Canada, and served as the venue for
release of preliminary findings from the HUD -Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) study on housing as a factor in HIV prevention and
treatment (H&H), as well as results of a large-scale examination of
the impact of supportive housing on health outcomes and service
utilization from the Chicago Housing for Health Partnership (CHHP).
Coverage by the Wall
Street Journal during the Summit highlighted the CHHP study and
its "housing-first" model and featured Summit speakers Mary Pelts, a
CHHP study-participant, and study director and NAHC board member,
Arturo Bendixen.
Summit III participants engaged in lively and
provocative discourse on a range of topics involving housing and
health disparities, housing as an intervention tool for prevention,
the cost-effectiveness of housing, and public policy issues. Over
two and a half days, compelling data-based research was presented
highlighting efficient models and methods addressing the need for
decent and affordable housing as a necessary tool to ensure more
positive health outcomes for PLWHAs. Summit keynoter, Shirlene
Cooper of the New York City AIDS Housing Network (NYCAHN) reminded
participants that "Advocacy without research is just a temper
tantrum".
The Summit concluded with policy and research
action strategy sessions focused on developing approaches for
elevating and advancing the AIDS housing policy agenda at the local,
state and federal levels. Participants cautioned that active
consumer participation become an integral component in ongoing work
on AIDS housing policy through future Summits and other related
venues.

The National Housing HIV/AIDS Research Summit series
is convened by the
National AIDS Housing Coalition, Inc. (NAHC), a 501(c)(3)
organization formed in 1994 to assert the fundamental right of all
persons living with HIV/AIDS to decent, safe, affordable housing and
supportive services that are responsive and appropriate to their
self-determined needs.
Summit III will continue NAHC’s collaboration with
the
Department of Health, Behavior and Society of the
Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University,
which was established in the summer of 2005 with a mission dedicated
to research and training that advances scientific understanding of
the impact on health of behavior and the societal context.
The National AIDS Housing Coalition has engaged
Hilary Botein and Ginny Shubert from
Shubert
Botein Policy Associates (SBPA) to help plan, coordinate, and
document the third Housing and HIV/AIDS Research Summit.
